Thougths on Tara Platt? Voice of Edelgard? (I love Edelgard ❤)
I think she’s pretty cool! I will say here and there, I personally (PERSONALLY, again, is the key word) think there’s range issues, but she’s a cool actress and holy fuck she did NOT deserve the abuse she got from demented Three Houses/Dimitri stans during 3H’s peak popularity. Like… yes I love Dimitri but I’m not THAT delusional that I think Tara should have been dragged through that shit.
Also, she’s not only Edelgard, she’s Miriel and Flavia! Outside of FEH, some of her well-known roles include Zero from Drakengard, Mitsuru Kirijo and Elizabeth from the Persona series, Washimi from Aggretsuko, and Temari from Naruto. And fun fact, she’s married to Yuri Lowenthal!
Ok so performance, I think she’s pretty great. Her lines as Miriel are punctual and mature, as Flavia she’s loud and confident, and as Edelgard she’s factual and cold. Though I will say that her lines as Flavia almost kind of fell into each line having the same tone for each reading, but she saved it with her lines about getting along and having your back. Her Miriel is my favorite, though.
Ok, controversy time. I think she fits Miriel and Flavia well. Edelgard… she FITS, but because of the fact that Edelgard once had a different actress, I have to say that I actually prefer Edelgard’s actress from the E3 trailer with all the beta footage. I think Tara’s voice fits as she makes Edelgard distant and closed off, but her voice deliveries come off as incredibly redundant each time. Compared to the E3 trailer (Which I WILL get wrong, I’m just trying to quote it from memory and paraphrase) “Do you dare to walk this path with me?… It’s now or never!” I actually think the other actress delivered a better performance. But still, Tara fits just fine.
Range? It’s all right, but it’s not super crazy. Part of it is that Tara’s one of actors who is type-casted, always playing some level of serious characters. But if you hear her lines as Elizabeth in Persona, she can do crazy voices, especially since out of Theodore, Margaret, and Lavenza, Elizabeth has the most emotional voice.
I think Tara’s a good 8/10. Regardless of my personal feelings on Edelgard, she’s a talented and seasoned VA.

For the writing ask game: #7
#7) What is your favorite scene you’ve written so far?
For my next chapter of the Tara Time Loop, my favorite scene is the one where Tara is face to face with Baron DeLamb while he's in prison. It's fun to show how her view of him has changed over the many loops, and how in many ways she's the one in complete power while in a relatively calm situation. I also got to work in some excellent foreshadowing for the last loop.
Here's a snippet:
Shadows training or not, Tara snarled. “And of course you worked with Baazovi for what would have the best political impact.”
“What about Baazovi?” her uncle drawled, eyes more focused on his hands than Tara. He flexed one hand as if checking his fingernails.
“What do you mean what about him? You work for the Light, as does he.” Uncle Fredrick’s eyelids flickered. If Tara hadn’t been focused, she would not have picked up on it.
She had refused to take her eyes off Bedlam for a second.

Doom Prompt 17: Drink
A writing prompt from my Doom discord, basted on the Garnets story.
has a mild hilt/spoiler for one living crucible that has not showed up. in the story. Came out that it was placed in a dream/vision world so to say for them to interact with the Slayer . 17: "John, Last Gift, and Sunwalker go out for a drink." ("Drink" doesn't have to mean alcohol, just something that makes them relax while they shit talk each other and reminisce)
“Aaand he's waking up. Morning boss,” a semi familiar voice spoke as John felt himself stretching, paused and felt around for Heather. Momentarily worried he had rolled over on the girl-
“What? Wait what?” The not really man blurted, then paused in confusion at hearing his own voice. He sat bolt upright, hands reaching incase he had rolled on the tiny fragile human-
And recognized Frederick in his phantom form. Blinked slowly before checking around them, seeing another all too familiar phantom, then the place sank in. The place was not quite in focus, as if the world outside of the two phantoms was not really there.
It was not, technically.
John had to focus his mind for a few long minutes, almost at a random recent memory to get the world to snap back into a semblance of order. John found himself sitting in one of the still unused areas of Taras Nabad. Somewhere mostly quiet but sounds of life could and did echo from below up to him. Them.
John yawned, sitting up in a planter and reached out. Catching and easily hauling the startled, shorter man closer. Arms wrapping shamelessly around Frederick, ignoring the protests before John shifted heavily on the soul tied to him. Settled in this endless moment now that he recognized they were in the Eternal between heartbeats. His body was… healing John was pretty sure.
“Really?” The once human demanded, Frederick was very firmly stuck and pulled up into the planter with John.
“Yes,” a gravel voice rumbled out as John shifted so the shorter man  was sitting between his own legs and the war god leaned forward to rest his chin on Frederick's shoulder. “Mine.”
“I told you not to get too close to him,” a third voice spoke up from the side.
John glanced over to see the other Phantom, arching an eyebrow at finding that one not in armor for once in their phantom form. Well, full armor. Sunwalker still looked like he was in light armor, at least around his lower half. The tall Argenta man had exposed chest, back and arms. Dark red tattoos shifted and moved along the exposed dark skin. As if climbing up one side and down the other on him.
John gave a lazy smile, “You think being over there will help you, old man?”
Sunwalker blinked, then frowned, “Don't you dare.”
The Slayer grinned in a lazy way, rubbing his cheek against Frederick’s head and shoulder. Arms tightened a bit more, knowing he could not hurt the other soul. The soul that made up the Last Gift gave what could be a sigh and leaned back, resigned as much as not really minding the attention. It was… oddly nice to be held in this form, not as a cubicle.
Though Frederick was getting used to that feeling too… he missed having a body proper. Missed many things, but at least his surviving family was safe in the Fortress again. His baby girl was safe, protected and loved, Frederick could relax a bit as his phantom form leaned back into the other and lost the armor. The reflection of his phantom being dressed in jeans and a blue Hawaiian shirt. Grinning over at the other living crucible as he was pulled closer.
“What? Just because he likes me more, you're just gonna glare, old man?” Frederick asked, reaching back to ruffle John's short hair as there was a thunder deep chuckle behind him.
“He does not,” Sunwalker found himself glaring, blinked red eyes and bristled. As much as himself for that moment of jealousy that slipped out of his control, then realizing that the Slayer was watching him intently. He bristled again, because this was HIS chosen after all, and Sunwalker had…chosen the Demigod first, even shared his title with the Slayer-
“No fighting, you're both mine.” John smiled, it was lopsided with the pulling scars as he chuckled and added, “You're both pretty.”
Frederick burst out laughing at that, sagging into the hold on him. While Sunwalker looked puzzled and then looked downward at his phantom self. Trying to sort out what was ‘pretty’ about him- or was it meant for his crucible self?
In this place, the Eternal, John felt comfortable to show a bit more of his emotions. As well as the curious sensation of feeling and hearing his own voice without the primordial forcing its way out of, well, he did not have to die to hear it again.
“I'm prettier than yooou,” Frederick was saying in a singsong tone.
“You have no glyphs or history yet boy,” Sunwalker snorted, but was now at least looking around the memory of the world around them. Recognizing almost belatedly that it seemed like Taras Nabad. Only… warn down.
Was this what his once home looked like as a Fortress City? It seemed abandoned.
“Sun, go around the corner, there should be a few barrels,” the Slayer said, even as he finally let go of Frederick to reflexively sign what he said, “I want one of those.”
He paused, blinking as if not used to hearing his own voice. Then mildly confused that the phantom of the Last Gift made no move to get away. If anything, Frederick seemed happy to lean back as if silently demanding to be held again not unlike Lily did but not wanting to admit it aloud.
John wondered if she got it from him, as he closed his arms around the phantom of his new living weapon. More than that, maybe not friends, not like they might have been if Frederick was alive. Definitely a bonded soul that the Slayer did not mind at all, and enjoyed when a memory was shared.
“Alcohol? Really?” Sunwalker demanded as the taller Argenta man came back from investigating. Holding a small, brown barrel between his hands, maybe only two feet long. “You know this would not affect you in life, let alone here?”
“Want.” John shrugged and made a clear ‘gimme’ motion without letting go.
“It would be vinegar,” Sunwalker made a face as he set it in the edge of the planter the other two were on, it almost had them at his eye level. The older living weapon reached to crack the wax seal and opened the top of the barrel. Not sure what to expect but it seemed like normal, dark liquid.
“You can have vinegar if you want,” Frederick as he sat up a bit too look at the barrel on the right, catching on first that it could be whatever he wanted the liquid to be. Looking around, the phantom patted down himself, and caught color in his peripheral and looked to the left.
This was not reality, being like a dream although it was not one either. So seeing his favorite mug was not that much of a surprise as he grabbed for it, even being held tight. His fingers just got the handle before John’s grip loosened. The mug was large and fit nicely in Fredericks hands, it was a swirling, senseless pattern of dark brown and tan colors with a blue lobster on it. The inside used to be gray but had been stained a bit by years of being used for coffee and espresso.
Frederick loved this mug, the memories tied to it, not minding sharing the real one with John as Lily had offered it. The once human man dipped the mug in the barrel and pulled it back, looking at the now warm amber fluid as he took a drink. A familiar smokey, oaky taste with a bite. Though with memory it was not as much of a bite that real whisky would have. “Gods I miss a good, aged whisky…”
“I liked… whisky.” John muttered, finally letting go to find a cup to get some himself. Half on Frederick’s memory, half with his own to taste.
This was not so bad, this moment that lasted forever, and after a quiet minute between them. There was even a feminine giggle and shadow of movement, the hell created crucible dancing on the edge of awareness. Not so fully bonded, but Sunwalker bristled even more.
The Argenta man turned away from the other two protectively. As much as he did not approve of everything the Last Gift did, Frederick’s soul was still young and favored too by Sunwalker’s Chosen. The living Hell blade had him glaring and just seeing something child size with a heavy looking skull over her head almost hiding whatever features she used to have but for burning orange eyes.
Moving almost too fast, Sunwalker lunged and the third phantom gave a delighted scream and ran through the ruins. Cackling in glee at what was a game to her as the Argenta tried to keep her away from his Chosen.
“Can we get him drunk, to chill out?” Frederick asked as he sipped, watching with John the chaos happening. Paused and hummed at his drink changing to a strong mocha.
“Hmm,” John considered it, “I… think I’ve already killed the titans old enough to do that to him.”
“Damn, he’s fat and old.”
“...WHAT did you call me boy?!”
“FAT and OLD!”
John grinned wide at the stomping coming back out of the ruins, and made no move to stop the fight about to start. Just watching as they could not hurt one another as phantoms or swords. He shifted to offer his cup of whisky to the girl that crawled out of the shadows and to look around him. The third living weapon grasping his hand and taking a sip, even making a face at the taste of the alcohol, but then when it changed to root beer took a keen interest in the cup.

Frozen Drabble Request
I just noticed that I've now officially got 100 Frozen fics on ao3, so to celebrate, send me an ask with any character (or characters) who canonically appears in a Frozen movie or short, or one of my OCs, and I'll write a 100 word drabble... If you have a particular line of dialogue or other prompt in mind (G or T rating-friendly) you can add that, but I've got various prompt lists I can pick from... (also optional to request a ship or AU, but see below for the ones I've written).
Alternatively, send me an ask with a question about an OC or AU...
Character/AU cheat sheet below the cut...
Canon characters: Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Hans, Olaf, Sven, Agnarr, Iduna, the trolls, Kai, Gerda, Oaken, Yelena, Mattias, Halima, Ryder, Honeymaren, the officially unnamed lady with the baby who asks Elsa if she's ok, and technically Rapunzel and Eugene. I haven't really written anything for Runeard or the Duke of Wesselton or any of the other attendees of Elsa's coronation, but they count. I haven't read any of the official novels or comics, nor have I seen the show Once Upon a Time. One exception to the movie/short rule: Lady Dagmar from the Olaf picnic on the Disney Wish.
Quasi-OCs: (in Canon but not named): Mrs. Nilsen (the lady with the baby), Karl Nilsen (the baby), Siggy Olsen ("why do I have to wear a suit?" boy), Renata (from Oaken's extended family)
OCs: Anna and Kristoff's children (Inga, Frederick, etc), Lars Nilsen, John, Meibel, Isabel, Kate, Edith, Oline, and if I'm counting Frozen cameo Rapunzel and Eugene, and if anyone remembers, Tara (appearing in one fic).
Ships I've written (or have drafts for): Anna/Kristoff, Anna/Hans, Elsa/Honeymaren, Elsa/Darcy (I'm the creator of that tag!), Mattias/Yelena, Mattias/Halima, and for OCs, Inga/Henry, Frederick/Meibel, and Lars/Elizabeth. Unpublished in drafts folder: Elsa/Kristoff, Anna/OC
AUs: canon-ish: The Young Diplomat; Canon divergence: kristanna childhood friends, the one where Anna marries Hans, [unpublished] Elsa/Kristoff AU, [unpublished] Anna/OC AU; Modern AUs: "tattoo removal", human!Olaf and Kristoff roommates, Rowing, various minor AUs from the Halloween fics, Rock'n'Royals; Crack Crossover: Frozen/Pride and Prejudice.

The Avengers with Tara King
I've got the complete set of Avengers DVDs, and I have to say I wasn't really looking forward to the Tara King episodes. I remember them being rather silly when I watched them on TV.
However, I'm being quite pleasantly surprised.
I'm up to the second disc of the Tara King era, and I found I have a vivid memory of Get-a-way - I had just completely forgotten it was an Avengers episode. The bad guys get away from a high security prison by becoming invisible. Even better, Peter Bowles is being properly villainous with a ridiculous moustache.
Then, for the vaudeville episode, they've got Jimmy Jewel as Merry Maxie Martin, Bernard Cribbins as his gag writer, John Cleese as the chap who looks after the eggs that clowns' faces are painted on (this is a real thing - every clown has distinctive make-up, which is recorded on an egg), and Talfryn Thomas (who played just about every Welshman on TV in the 1960s) as Fiery Frederick!
So the guest actors are top notch!
I'm certainly going to carry on watching (until it gets really silly, anyway).

Who's Who In The DC Universe #2: Balloon Buster, Baron Bedlam, Baron Blitzkrieg, Baron Winters, the Barren Earth, and Bat Lash
Balloon Buster by Joe Kubert
Steven Henry Savage, Jr was born and raised in Mustang River, Wyoming
Trained by his poverty-stricken father to be a consummate marksman
Enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the onset of World War I
Repeatedly disobeyed orders, breaking formation to attack and destroy the German combat balloons, earning the nickname “Balloon Buster”
His commanding officer, Major Michaels, continually sought to court-martial Savage, General Talbot of High Command applauded his actions and demanded he be kept in combat
Savage was one of the most aggressive warriors of the first World War often dueled with his counterpart, Germany’s Enemy Ace
I never read much of the war comics from the various companies. I will say Enemy Ace received the cooler nickname. Balloon Buster had one post-Crisis appearance in a Batman comic James Robinson, writer of Starman and The Golden Age, tied the Balloon Buster to several previous DC characters. Matt “Trail Boss” Savage became the father of Brian “Scalphunter” Savage who became the father of Steven Henry Savage (no longer a Jr). Trail Boss and Scalphunter were stars of DC’s western comics. Robinson loved connecting various characters into a legacy line (read Starman to see how he connects all “Starmen” from Ted Knight to Thom Kallor into a single Starman legacy). The Wild West was circa the 1860s and World War II was 1914 – 1918, so Scalphunter could have fathered Balloon Buster. All three characters were marksmen so it works.
Baron Bedlam by Jim Aparo
Frederick DeLamb was the son of the regent installed upon the Markovian throne by the Nazis during World War II
DeLamb’s father exploited the position to enrich himself
Allied forces restored King Victor Markov to the throne near the end of the World War II
The DeLambs fled Markovia and amassed a fortune in an as-yet-undisclosed manner
Frederick DeLamb, calling himself Baron Bedlam, returned to Markovia, and attempted a coup to put himself on the throne
Baron Bedlam’s coup was thwarted by Brion Markov (aka Geo-Force) and members of the newly formed Outsiders
Frederick was captured by the Markovian people and is presumably dead or in prison
Well, Bedlam wasn’t dead as I remember seeing him in an Infinity Inc/Outsiders crossover I read. I don’t remember seeing Bedlam in any comics after the 1980s but its likely he made further appearances in the various Outsiders series. Bedlam with an updated origin featured in the Young Justice season (3?) that focused on Brion, Tara, and Halo.
Baron Blitzkrieg by Rich Hoberg & Tanghal
A Prussian nobleman who was made a concentration camp commandment.
A ruthless administrator who incurred the hatred of his prisoners.
A newly arrived inmate threw a vial of acid at him which quickly destroyed his features.
Hitler used the opportunity to have his scientists begin months of experimentation on the man.
The Prussian nobleman was transformed into a human fighting machine, a new tool for Hitler’s plan for world conquest.
The Baron battled the World’s Finest, the All-Star Squadron, and Wonder Woman.
Like Two Face, Blitzkrieg’s face was disfigured by acid. The difference is Two-Face is an interesting character. I don’t think the Baron has been seen since the 1980s and I don’t see him making a reappearance any time soon.
Baron Winters by Gene Colan & Bob Smith
Little is known of the Baron’s early days. He is said to have been a carnival baker, a teacher, a wizard, a writer, a king, and more.
He studied in another reality where he broke the laws by falling in love with another student, Katrina.
Their short-lived union produced a son, Gowan, who for centuries hade his father’s uncaring attitudes.
Winters maintains he’s been an advisor to emperors, warriors, and barbarians.
He has settled in Georgetown, Washington DC, and deals with the arcane arts.
He formed a group called the Night Force.
His mansion is connected to a “time-stream” that allows him to move from one century to the next.
Rarely leaves his mansion, preferring to remain inside with his cat, Merlin. Only leaving to solve mysteries that pique his interest.
Katrina and Gowan have come to live with the Baron along with Alice Jones, a time-displaced woman from the 1930s.
I feel for the Baron – I too would prefer to remain at home with my cats and books. I have a vague memory of reading a Baron Winters appearance in the 1980s – perhaps in the Swamp Thing storyline that involved multiple magic users. Maybe with Madame Xanadu? Another character that hasn’t been seen in a while but a talented writer could have fun with the Baron.
The Barren Earth by Ron Randall
Far in the future, the sun cooled and expanded, becoming a red giant.
Most of humanity fled to the stars but some remained, protected from the devastation by the walls of D’Roz, a floating city.
Mastering techniques which greatly expanded their longevity, these “Old Ones” embarked on a genetic engineering program.
They repopulated the Earth with new life-forms fierce and hardy enough to thrive in the blasted environment.
Two genetically altered human variants stood at the pinnacle of this ecosystem.
The first was the Harahashan, nomadic hordes of lizard-like men that lived in the desserts.
The second species were the fungoid Mulge who lived in the deep recesses of the earth.
Meanwhile, the humanity who had fled to the stars encountered the Qlov, an implacable insect-like species.
Humanity retreated to the “Barren Earth” to build starship bases.
The war passed Earth by, and the garrisons of human left behind fell into barbarism.
Two thousand years later, the Earth battles the Qlov again.
The human empire dispatched an expedition to reactivate the old star bases on Earth.
The ship was attacked by the Qlov and only one human survivor reached the surface of the “Barren Earth” – Jinal ne Comarr.
Jinal assembled a multi-racial band to unite the warring tribes of the planet.
It is not known if she succeeded in her quest or if the anticipated Qlov invasion happened.
This entry is more of a setting than a character. As far as I know, the “Barren Earth” hasn’t been seen since the 1980s. It’s a setting that any of the DC time travellers – Booster Gold, Rip Hunter, ect – could encounter in one of their journeys through time.
Bat Lash by Dave Gibbons
Bartholomew Aloysious Lash was raised to be tough by his farmer father but cultured by his educated mother.
When his parents were swindled out of their farms, Bart sought justice as he had been taught.
Forced to kill a crooked deputy, he was branded a murderer.
Bart discovered his parents and the woman he loved had been killed while his home burned down in flames.
Bart left his sister and his girlfriend, Betsy, at a convent for protection.
Bart took to the road, pursuing vengeance.
Cue lots of “Wild West” adventures while pursuing his parents’ killer.
Bat Lash, along with Jonah Hex, Tomahawk, Scalphunter, Cinnamon, etc was one of DC’s Western heroes. He still makes occasional appearances and I seem to remember that Bat Lash had a miniseries in the 2010s.

ALDER MANOR - WESTCHESTER, NY
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alder Manor is what one might call an “addendum” to a park… a sort of illegal one but there aren’t “No Trespassing” signs EVERYWHERE so I like to think it’s a vague policy no one told me about...
Tumblr media
Alder Manor is what resides on the other side of the brick wall that denotes the property line ending for Lenoir Preserve, and unfortunately, for the Wightman Mansion on Lenoir Preserve property, Alder Manor is the mansion and estate that really catch your eye as you walk through Lenoir. The brick wall has been vandalized enough over the years that you can pretty easily find a way over, around or literally through it and onto the Alder Manor property…. which again, I plead the Fifth if anyone comes asking…
Tumblr media
The piece of land that Alder Manor resides on was the same ancestral home to the Weckquaesgeek, who were a part of the larger Wappinger chieftancy who generally lived in the Yonkers area as was the case for Lenoir Preserve. The informational plaques at Lenoir Preserve indicate that the land was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape tribe (translates to “true people”) and they called the area “Keskeskick”, which isn’t necessarily wrong as the Lenni Lenape is a broad name for any native who lived between essentially the Hudson Valley down to the area around modern-day Philadelphia. I don’t know the exact details, I’m sure they involved trickery, violence or misunderstandings, so I’ll put it in the nice way of saying, the Lenni Lenape were “pushed” out of the area in the 1600s and eventually a man named Frederick Philipse III, whose family had acquired the land two generations prior, then owned the property of what is now known as Lenoir Preserve and Alder Manor.
Tumblr media
Fast forward to the 20th Century and Alder Manor is a little bit of a New York history geek’s dream come true. AKA, my dream come true.
Alder Manor is also sometimes known as the W.B. Thompson Mansion, named after William Boyce Thompson, a mining tycoon and later Wall Street financier in regards to mining who had intended to use this palatial estate as his weekend home…
This part though is roughly where I suddenly became DEEPLY obsessed with the history of Alder Manor.
Tumblr media
Mr. W.B. Thompson, in all of his apparently ridiculous riches, commissioned the architecture firm of Carrere and Hastings, who are better known for being the architects of the NEW YORK FREAKING PUBLIC LIBRARY! YOU KNOW, THE ONE WITH THE LIONS AND BRYANT PARK OUT BACK AND THE BREATHTAKING OLD NEW YORK ARCHITECTURE?!!?!? You know which one I’m yelling about?
..... I'm assuming you're as stunned and excited as me...
Tumblr media
Anyway, Thompson lived in the house until his death in 1930, when it then passed on to his wife who lived there until her death in 1950. (If you’d like to see his absurdly nice mausoleum by the way, you can OF COURSE find it at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, like everyone else famous from the area.) Upon her earthly demise, Mrs. Thompson legally willed the Manor and estate to the Archdiocese of New York and Alder Manor was converted into the first Catholic high school in Yonkers.
By 1989, the estate had switched hands again and was made a part of the Iona College campus due to space limitations in New Rochelle on the main campus. This was short lived, however, and the property began to be sold off to various developers.
The property has clearly been neglected and vandalized over the years, but since the late 1990s, the Irish Cultural Heritage Center, The Tara Circle, bought the manor and plan to revitalize it and turn it into their base of operations and an event venue.
Alder Manor has actually been used for scenes in movies such as A Beautiful Mind, The Royal Tenebaums and Mona Lisa Smile, which as a movie nerd, pleases me greatly.
Tumblr media
BECAUSE OF COURSE, my favorite non-bird related part of Lenoir Preserve is NOT EVEN TECHNICALLY PART OF LENOIR PRESERVE. SOOOO, yes, I guess it is TECHNICALLY “trespa$$ing” but it’s owned by the Tara Circle, which is the Irish Cultural Heritage Center of Westchester and I’m Irish so I’m gonna say screw it. I get a free pass, and my free pass extends to my Italian boyfriend. LIVE LIFE ON THE EDGE (of a brick wall)! But also, don't vandalize things ever please.

Personal and Professional Reading: Making Time for What We Love Most
The question I am asked most often by my fellow teachers, whether we are chatting in the halls at a conference, talking about teaching at the Norton booth while they look at a copy of Uncharted Territory, or trading ideas online is: How do you manage to read so much while still teaching full-time? It is a very important question.
Before I talk about HOW I do all that reading while still teaching (eleventh grade English the last few years, FWIW) let me say a few things about WHY I read so much and why I hope you will make time in your personal and professional life this year to read as much as you can. As you will learn when you read “A Personal Prologue,” my literacy narrative in Uncharted Territory, I read very little growing up. In fact, the only book I can honestly recall having read for high school was Bless the Beasts and the Children, which turned out to be a life-changing moment for me, though I could not know it then.
As you will see in other literacy narratives in the new edition of Uncharted Territory, first-generation college students such as myself, Mike Rose, Tara Westover, Jimmy Santiago Baca, and autodidacts such as Frederick Douglass often have some moment of intellectual awakening through an encounter with a book that they stumble upon. Once I began reading after high school, while fumbling my way through that first semester at a local community college and working in a printing factory doing the most menial tasks imaginable (collating the pages of books manually in the bindery, ironically), I became a reader. Once I began reading, I found myself caught up in the virtuous cycle of seeing myself more and more as a student, as a reader, as someone who thought and was curious about things—which led me to read about them, and so it continued.
Once Jimmy Santiago Baca began reading in the shadowy recesses of his prison cell, there was no way back to the person he had been; so it was for Mike Rose, so it was for Tara Westover, for Frederick Douglass, and for me. Years later, in my first years of teaching, I became friends with Carol Jago, who always asked if I had read the latest New Yorker or some novel by Pat Barker or Toni Morrison, or all the other authors she exposed me to. So I began reading to be able to be part of the conversation with colleagues about books, teaching, and so much more. She was the first of what would become my reading mentors—those people who guide us through the uncharted territory of other lives, worlds, and experiences. But what she really did, as did others along the way in those early years, was make me realize that I wanted to be someone who continued to learn alongside the students I taught, to not lose sight of the pleasure and passion that had led me to want to become an English teacher in the first place.
At the end of “A Personal Prologue,” I explain that when my students ask me what I believe in during those rich conversations we are always hoping to have with our kids, “my answer to this question has always been the same: I believe in education.” But the deeper, more personal answer is that I believe in reading, in that personal journey we must all undertake to become ourselves. As one of my three children said recently in response to my growing passion for fly fishing, “Oh, you know Dad is really into something when he starts reading about it.”
As for HOW I get all that reading done? I think it mostly comes down to curiosity. The other day, I listened to Ezra Klein interview Ta-Naheisi Coates and Nikole Hannah-Jones on his podcast. They talked about the texts they always teach in their classes for the quality of their writing. Coates went on at length about Kathleen Schulz’s essay about earthquakes titled, “The Really Big One”—I had to read that. And when Hannah-Jones talked about one of Coates’s essays, I went back and read that. This was actually a rare occasion when I listened to a podcast, for they are not texts that we can easily use in the classroom nor which I can include in Uncharted Territory. They are wonderful, but as I am trying to challenge my students through complex texts, they are not of much use to me. What are of great use to me and I highly encourage you to check out are audiobooks. Though I have used Audible for many years, Scribd is a tremendous value for teachers and is a bit more like Netflix for readers. There, for less than nine bucks a month, I can read widely—ebooks, audiobooks, magazines, and much more—in the quest for great texts to share with teachers and students in Uncharted Territory.
There are so many other resources I could share and which I find useful, but my point is that it has never been easier to be reading all the time—not out of a sense of obligation but a sense of joy and exploration. At the moment, as I prepare to return to school, I am reading Michael Lewis’s wonderful The Premonition in print in the evenings; listening to Davind Blight’s magnificent Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom as I make my breakfast and tend to various chores around the house; sipping from Phillip Lopate’s delicious The Contemporary American Essay; sneaking in an essay by David Brooks from the latest Atlantic on all the things he now thinks he got wrong about America in his previous books; spending time before returning to school to read and really think about Kate Murphy’s You’re Not Listening, which is so insightful and useful; and, finally, because she remains, after all these years, a good friend and constant guide to books, waiting to begin reading the book Carol Jago most recently said I had to read: The Undocumented Americans, by Karla Cornejo Villivicencio.
By the time I sat down to begin sorting and choosing texts for this newest edition of Uncharted Territory, I had about three times more to choose from than I had room to include. But this is what makes Uncharted a special book to me: I am always reading what seems interesting to me but would also be of interest and use to you and all my fellow English teachers. Even now, with this second edition finished and coming out, I am already on the hunt for new pieces for the next edition that will come out years from now. In the meantime, you will find me here, in this blog, thinking about the challenges we face together and doing my best to share what I think will help you navigate your way through them in the year ahead.
